A very original movie, not quite horror, not quite torture, and only unfulfilled revenge (the rape tape). The costumes were great, and there isn't too much blood.
I felt at first that the body modification element was unjustly portrayed, as the characters displaying it were prostitutes, and Mary was repulsed by the image alteration surgery she performed. However in the second half of the film, Mary is enjoying the lifestyle she gained by entering the community, and those within it do not judge her for not conforming to their taste for alteration, but admire her skill with a scalpel.
I think the revenge element fell flat because the torture victim had to be disposed of before he fulfilled his purpose, and the other man who should also have been punished was dealt with by Billy, who had nothing to do with the rape of Mary.
I was disappointed with the ending. As we watch Mary become darker, indulging her customers' wishes and turning down tame requests, she seems to also want a relationship of some kind with Billy. The way she turned on the blonde stripper was very out of character. Before, it was easy to feel empathy and pity for Mary as the victim of a male-dominated surgery environment, forcing her to abandon her aspirations. This completely justifies the abduction and torment of her rapist. It was very disappointing to see Beatrice and Ruby as victims of male anger when they were previously using their individuality and unique appearance to their own advantage. This film sets up successful females only to tear them down. That's why I was so unhappy with Mary's ending. Perhaps it would have been better to allow her to disappear, with only photos appearing on her website depicting her latest work.

American Mary review

Aftershock review

This movie had some good points and some bad points. I think the setting was great and the quick energetic pace in the beginning of the movie really puts the viewer in the mindset of a tourist. The characters were quickly established and although Monica was immediately labelled 'the party pooper', and Pollo was 'the rich guy', the characters interacted well and made me interested in their holiday. The nightclub scene was pretty funny, and the cable car scene extremely predictable. What followed was kind of a mess, the tension was lost when the terror carried on too long. However, I was still interested in the survival of the characters and I do enjoy the killing off of each one. The twist in the tunnels was a surprise, and the very last scene made me laugh. Ok it's not a great film, but I give it 6/10 because I really enjoyed the use of Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country, and the creativity in the way of disasters that hit the characters.

Murder by Numbers review

Where's the thrill of finding out whodunnit when we already know who did it, how, who they've set up, pretty much everything. The pacing is really terrible. There's never any tension.
Why is the detective's dating life so important? It's mentioned all the time, by her colleagues and suspects, but never by herself.
The only good thing about this movie is the interaction between Michael Pitt and Ryan Gosling.
I like a good thriller. This isn't one.

The Haunting review

The first half of this movie is pretty good, the set is really beautiful. I liked the unusual approach to the haunted house trope - the fear study. But the second half was ridiculous. Terrible dialog, really awful typecast characters (e.g. CZJ is the slut who wants to sleep with everyone...although she doesn't sleep with anyone at all). After the reveal of the plot twist I couldn't take it anymore and laughed out loud. Also the justification for the haunting (because he wanted children around him) doesn't make much sense.

The Woman In Black review

Poor movie. Poor acting, poor pacing, poor plotline and poor scares. They did get the Victorian look right, the sets are very beautiful. The costumes too. Otherwise, not a very good film.

The Last House on the Left review

The Last House On The Left is something like Funny Games with an optimistic ending. It had little dialog, which I think speaks for the quality of the film, because it was never boring, although not very scary. Th only problem I saw was the contrived 'good guy wins' conclusion. Having said that, the ending was really good and unexpected.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer review

what a ridiculous ending. Did not enjoy this movie much. Colours were good but apart from that I was very disappointed.

The Conjuring review

I expected more from this movie because of high ratings. What did I get? The visuals are great, the setting is very pretty with the right amount of creepy. The characters are run-of-the-mill vessels for supernatural torture. The pacing is so-so, with three distinct spikes becoming progressively more intense.
The biggest problem is the way the secondary storyline (Annabel) is set up at the very beginning, mentioned throughout the film in the Warrens' lectures & other scenes, but ultimately has absolutely no effect. Why was it given so much importance for no reason?
The 'mother' as motive for the demonic activity was revealed all too easily by the clairvoyant, and then parroted out multiple times. A major plot point should not have to be explained verbally, but shown in images. This seems like poor writing.
It certainly isn't an innovative ghost story - there are distinct echoes of the Exorcist and many other possession films here. Not too scary either.

Oblivion review

Not a great movie, pretty much a rip-off of Moon with a few extra characters thrown in. I thought the plot was ridiculous and the twist very obvious. The female characters were nothing more than love-interests for the protagonist. I felt the character interaction was really forced and not given time to develop, relying on flashbacks to establish the romance aspect... which fell totally flat.

Drive review

i liked how gosling was silent for a good bit of the movie, i feel his accent doesnt match his face so that worked for me. its was a pretty film, i loved the orange/blue colours and the cars. i cant decide if the violence was unnecessary or adequate. i think a neat ending would have required the death of gosling's character, and the longish scene of him staring and not moving was a cheap trick. overall good movie with a great soundtrack 7/10
